Golden Opportunities

FORWORD

Bob Shoemaker When I was Chief Metallurgist at Bechtel Corp. I put together for my metallurgists a little publication called The Circulating Load. It contained articles describing both good and not-so-good things in plants we, and others, had built. It was also distributed to several of our clients who had requested to be put on the mailing list. In 2002 Doug Halbe suggested that it be published by SME, which it was, and the next year SME published it in Spanish, the first book in that language by SME. One of my metallurgists at Bechtel, Mario Watkins, did a superb job on the translation.

Later, as a consultant, I consulted fifteen years for Gold Fields and had the pleasure of participating in the design of their Mesquite and Chimney Creek plants and a number of studies. Most of my time was spent making bi-monthy visits to their mills just to talk to their metallurgists. Jim Arnold, who was Mill Superintendent at Chimney Creek, adopted the Circulating Load idea and became the editor of Golden Opportunities which was written by Gold Fields metallurgists. Doug Halbe was also a valued contributor. I should add here that I have never worked with a finer and more talented group of people than those at Gold Fields. GO, as it was known by, was primarily written for gold people but all of the articles will be of interest to others as milling practice is not limited to one metal. Some ofthe articles are perhaps out of date but if the reader will dig a little deeper he will find some mighty fine thinking that it will pay to absorb.

Hopefully, this publication will be of benefit to many metallurgists and encourage them to think freely to solve their problems. Many years ago when I worked for Union Carbide I was asked by management to fill out a long questionnaire that would tell what I thought my job should be. I left all the spaces blank and attached the following sentence. "Every engineer should use a half hour each day to do nothing but think."
